Wimba Classroom Basic Workshop

This DLVPC-sponsored workshop is required for all faculty members teaching a UMB CCDE online course for the first time.)

Mandatory introductory Wimba Classroom instruction for UMB CCDE online faculty, all of whom are required to use this synchronous conferencing to meet with students, minimally twice per term, in each online course section taught. Through this workshop, you will learn how synchronous conferencing supports course meetings and virtual office hours, provides an audio chat function, and presentation tools including a PowerPoint™ importation feature, whiteboard, application sharing, and web touring (a "push" technology for providing students with quick access to web sites).
Topics will include:

• the procedures for requesting Synchronous Conferencing for your course
• the support process by which students are notified of how to access the synchronous conferencing environment
• the support typically required by students configuring hardware and software for participation
• the location, content, and focus of support materials on web
• communication tools and presentation tools used during sessions
• the methods for accessing archives of recorded course meetings

Participation involves hands-on activities at computer workstations, discussions, and presentations of key concepts; online faculty will experience synchronous conferencing as participants in a live session, from the vantage point of students attending a session. Simultaneously, participants will see the instructor's (Presenter) facilitation tools (projected on large screen), observing as the trainer facilitates communication and provides presentations within the virtual environment.

Presenter: Alan Girelli

Wimba Classroom Practice Workshops

This DLVPC-sponsored workshop is optional but available to all faculty members teaching a UMB CCDE online course. Some first-time instructors have found this workshop beneficial as an immediate follow-up to attending Wimba Classroom Basic Workshop. Faculty members returning to online teaching after a semester or two off, and those who have trained in using Wimba but have not used Wimba recently or extensively also benefit from attending Practice Workshops.

NOTE: Wimba Classroom Basic Workshop is a prerequisite for this practice workshop.

This workshop is for faculty members who have attended the Wimba Classroom Basic Workshop, and who are looking for an opportunity to practice the skills of leading a session in Wimba Classroom. Participants will review basic functions and communication systems in Wimba, rehearse how to introduce students to synchronous conferencing, then lead a mock-session in Wimba Classroom.

During mock-sessions, participants will start an archive (recording) of the session, insert PowerPoint's into a Wimba Classroom, and practice invoking slides. Particicipants will also practice using application sharing, web touring tools, text chat, and the white board.
